Murshidabad

With its profusion of medieval architecture in the form of palaces, mosques, tombs and gardens, Murshidabad, a district in West Bengal, is a place where the past is very much a living part of the present. Once the seat of power of the Nawabs of Bengal in the 18th century, it is intimately related to events that ultimately changed the history of India.
The Nawab Siraj-ud-daula lost the Battle of Plassey in 1757 against Clive, the architect of the British Empire in India and gradually power passed on to the hands of the British. Situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi, Murshidabad is also famous for its silk.
