Jamnagar

Headquarters of the district of the same name, Jamnagar was the capital of the princely state Nawanagar ruled by the Jadeja Rajputs. Founded by Jam Raval in 1540, this city located in the Saurashtra region is today home to a large oil refinery thus earning the sobriquet “Oil City of India”. The princely state was ruled 1907 to 1933 by famous cricketer Jamsaheb Ranjit Sinhji, who contributed substantially towards the development of the place. Apart from being famous for its tie-and-dye work on fabrics, silk and gold embroidery, the place is home to an Ayurvedic University to impart training in the traditional Indian system of medicine.
